The Design Quality Indicator for schools is a method of evaluating the design and construction of new school buildings and the refurbishment of existing buildings. The DQI is a process that actively involves the school community in the design of their school buildings. It can be used at all stages of a building’s development and plays a fundamental role in contributing to the improved quality of school buildings.
The Design Quality Indicator was launched in 2002 to provide a tool to assess the design quality of buildings. A large percentage of those using the tool were from the public sector applying it to school buildings. For this reason a version of the Design Quality Indicator was developed specifically for use on schools and launched in 2005.
