Notes from discussions

The following points were made during the debate:

  • Should Government make value measurement compulsory, how do we do this how do we achieve Value?
  • Excellent that the DQI for Schools is compatible with BREEAM for Schools - it will help clients to address sustainability
  • Some of the time Government buildings are excellent; but how do we push most of the buildings to be better. These tools are only part of this process
  • How do we layer sustainability into WLV in the most sensible way
  • We have to look forward to the future to see us getting the most of the data we are collecting. We have some data with the DQI and this as demonstrated by Imperial College we are already learning from this. With WLV we will have to wait a long time, over 30 years, before we can really go back and know the value of what we are collecting. Can we commit for that length of time?
  • Need to discuss not just how to address and measure value but why to do it. We need to educate clients
  • If WLV is too complex and needs collaborating with data which will take 10 years to collect it will never happen
  • We need to collect good research data which tells us if we build a building to a certain standard you will make these savings over time. Aligning WLV with the DQI/BCIS approaches could help us do this
  • We need a single voice on quality and value
  • Keep the approach simple
  • What are the challenges to facilitating this?
  • The proposed model of VALiD feeding into DQI and WLV is powerful (illustrated below)
